กัญชาเดิมเป็นสมุนไพรพื้นบ้านใช้ในการประกอบอาหารและเป็นส่วนผสมของตำรับยาไทย ใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลายในไทยมาตั้งแต่โบราณ แต่ต้องหยุดใช้ตามอนุสัญญาว่าด้วยการควบคุมยาเสพติดให้โทษ ปี ค.ศ.1961 ขององค์การสหประชาชาติ ส่งผลให้กัญชาเป็นสิ่งผิดกฎหมายในประเทศไทย ใครปลูกหรือใช้ย่อมมีความผิดทางอาญา
ทำให้คนไทยต้องเลิกปลูก เลิกใช้ องค์ความรู้ในการปลูกและการใช้กัญชาก็พลอยหายไปหมด มีแอบปลูก แอบใช้อยู่ใต้ดินบ้างก็ไม่มาก ไม่ได้พัฒนาความรู้ทางด้านกัญชาอย่างเปิดเผย และเป็นระบบ
